HANDS AND HEARTS FOR SERVICE: Several hundred family members from

different faith communities in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach are meeting

from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Dover and 16th Street at the Church of

Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints for a day of Hands and Hearts

service to the community, said Jaimie Day, vice president of the Newport

Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council, one of the event sponsors. The volunteers

will be teaming up to do service projects in the community, painting a

fence, cleaning up a yard, collecting toys and food for needy families

and sorting clothes donated by members of the Rotary Club of Newport

Beach Sunrise.

A group of Christian and Muslim women, who belong to a group called

Children of Afghanistan Relief Effort, will be cutting from a McCall’s

pattern and sewing a traditional garment for boys and girls of

Afghanistan. The garments will be collected and shipped to Afghanistan in

the coming weeks. “We can work together for a common and greater cause in

service to others and in the process of coming together, Christian and

Muslim alike, we are experiencing a deep healing and God’s abundant

love,” said Susan Munsell, CARE coordinator.

KIDS HELPING KIDS: A follow-up to my column of Oct. 27 when I

mentioned that Pomona Elementary School students had received the UNICEF

coin boxes to be used on Halloween to collect coins for the children of

Afghanistan. A very proud principal, Julie McCormick, notes the children

collected over $600 in coins to help feed, cloth and provide medical care

for schoolchildren in Afghanistan. Many of the local children gave up the

traditional Halloween trick or treat opportunity to collect coins for

some very needy children in Afghanistan. Congratulations to the children

of the Westside school!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING: I am off to Minneapolis for my annual

Thanksgiving visit with family, with my brother being the only one left

of my birth family. Daughters Stacy and Jodi will be joining me in

Minneapolis while Barbara will have Thanksgiving Day dinner with her

sister in Palm Desert. We will probably get some snow while they will get

the sun.

I got the best air fare in many a year for my flight from John Wayne

to Minneapolis. And we got an even better rate on the Hilton Hotel in

Minneapolis. I am going to take with me the Web site address for the

Newport Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau and let my cousins know, now

is the time to head west.

John Cassady, bureau executive director, noted at an Orange County

Coast Assn. luncheon last week that the local hotels have joined with

airlines and local attractions to put together some unbelievable travel

packages for visitors from the Northwest, Midwest and East Coast.

All four of us have flown a couple of times since Sept. 11 and have

felt safe. The only long wait was for the plane, not for the security

lines. You can’t find a better time to travel, visit family and friends

or be a tourist. And it goes both ways.

So, invite your family and friends to visit Southern California and

share the conference and visitors bureau Web site with them: o7

https://www.newportbeach-cvb.comf7 . The prices have never been better.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
