Girls basketball: Sailors beaten

Newport Harbor High scored only two points in the first quarter and

went on to lose its season opener, 65-31, to host Fountain Valley in a

nonleague girls basketball game Tuesday.

The Barons scored 16 points in the first quarter and took a 26-9 lead

at halftime.

Jillianne Whitfield had nine points, seven rebounds and four assists

for the Sailors (0-1). Evita Castillo chipped in with seven points and

10 rebounds for Newport.

The Sailors will try to get on the winning track Saturday when they

enter the University High Tournament.
