Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The Corona del Mar High boys cross country team wins the Division IV

state title. The Sea Kings, coached by Bill Sumner, finish with 122

points to runner-up Granada High’s 123. Jason Rogers and Tyler Beardslee

pace the CdM contingent with clockings of 16:25 and 16:27, 21st and 22nd,

respectively. Sharing the glory for CdM is Patrick Russell (27th), Brian

Coombe (35th), Matt Dennerline (37th) and a key finish for Richard

Hossfeld (49th).

The Newport Harbor football team scores a 27-18 win over Foothill in a

CIF Southern Section Division V quarterfinal. The Sailors’ defense causes

eight turnovers, including four interceptions. Newport does not commit a

turnover. Brett Baker intercepts two passes, as does Greg Wertman, while

Pete Hogan (two), Baker and Erik Runfola each recover a fumble.

Quarterback Josiah Fredriksen rushes for a touchdown and throws TD passes

to Brad La Bass.

Newport Harbor’s Ray Ohrel becomes the greatest single-season rusher

in school history by gaining 134 of his 157 yards in the second half of

the 27-18 win over Foothill. Ohrel carries 29 times, including one

touchdown, giving him 1,810 rushing yards in 1996, breaking Steve Brazas’

1983 single-season record of 1,738. He rushes for more than 100 yards for

the ninth time in the season.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

Jane Hilgendorf, the Orange Coast College women’s volleyball coach, is

named Coach of the Year in the Orange Empire Conference. Earlier in the

season, Hilgendorf says she will step down as OCC coach at the end of the

season.

The OCC women’s volleyball team advances to the second round of the

Southern California Regional playoffs following a 15-7, 15-10, 9-15, 15-8

victory over Santa Monica. The Pirates receive a balanced effort

offensively as Stacy Bekemeyer leads with 12 kills, Reiko Matsumoto and

Kit Spaath add 10 each, and Bryn Gillis chips in with nine. Bekemeyer and

Gillis each have six blocks.

The men’s basketball team at Southern California College, now Vanguard

University, wins its fourth straight game to open the season with a

103-76 decision over visiting Bethany. Keith Randolph scores a game-high

30 points, 22 in the second half. Randolph also grabs 13 rebounds.

P.J. Polowski goes for a hat trick to lead the OCC men’s soccer team

to a 4-1 victory over visiting Cuyamaca in the first round of the

Southern California Regionals.

The SCC women’s basketball team earns its first victory of the season,

70-53, over visiting Whittier College. Kristen Bevis leads the way for

the Vanguards, now Lions, with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
