CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP

WHAT HAPPENED:

City Council unanimously voted to issue a contract to Camp, Dresser &

McKee Inc., an engineering, consulting and construction firm, to help the

city develop a water-quality management plan.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The city hopes the plan will improve the city’s ability to manage the

quality and quantity of dry season urban runoff. It is also an attempt to

reduce the polluted urban runoff from going into coastal waters with the

help of Geographic Information and Global Positioning Systems.

The city has $660,820 budgeted for the plan, which is part of the $4

million Water Quality Grant Fund the city received from Proposition 13,

approved in March 2000. Proposition 13 supports safe drinking water

quality, flood protection and water reliability projects throughout the

state.

Areas of water-quality monitoring that need attention in the city are

treatment technologies, educational outreach programs, new development

requirements, maintenance of storm drain facilities, increased

enforcement programs and water-quality catch basins.
