Boys water polo: March, Dorr share top CIF honors

Dorr, who led the Sea Kings to their third straight CIF Southern Section

Division II boys water polo crown last month, have been named CIF

Division II Co-Players of the Year.

March and Dorr top a list of nine Back Bay standouts chosen All-CIF by

section coaches.

March, who shared the top Division II individual honor last season as

well, scored 48 goals and added 24 assists and 46 steals to help Coach

John Vargas’ final team finish 24-3.

Dorr, who was Pacific Coast League Co-MVP this fall and first-team

All-CIF Division II as a sophomore, led CdM with 62 goals and also

compiled 32 assists and 34 steals.

CdM junior John Mann, who shared PCL MVP laurels with Dorr, is a

first-team selection, as is senior goalie Sherwin Kim.

Newport Harbor High junior Nathan Weiner is a first-team choice in

Division I.

CdM standouts Marcello Pantuliano and Bobby Messenger are second-team

honorees in Division III, while Ross Sinclair represents the Sailors on

the Division I second team.

Newport Harbor junior Michael Bury rounds out the area honorees as a

third-team pick in Division I.

Weiner, who helped the Tars (15-15) reach the Division I

quarterfinals, scored 59 goals and chipped in 21 steals.

Mann was Co-Player of the Year in the PCL. He produced 60 goals, 39

steals and 20 assists.

Kim, a second-team All-CIF choice in 2000, collected 134 saves, 13

assists and 20 saves, despite sharing time in goal for most of the

season. He went the distance in the Sea Kings’ 16-4 CIF title-game

triumph over Esperanza.

Sinclair, a junior who shared Player of the Year laurels in the Sea

View League, compiled 53 goals, a team-high 37 assists, as well as 25

steals for first-year coach Jason Lynch.

Messenger, a senior who earned third-team All-CIF recognition as a

junior, finished with 29 goals, 16 assists and 15 steals.

Pantuliano, a senior, led the Sea Kings with 72 steals and also added

29 goals and 29 assists.

Bury, a sophomore two-meter man, scored 56 goals for the Sailors.

Esperanza’s Galen Diaz somehow claimed Division II Coach of the Year

honors over Vargas.

Harvard-Westlake junior Marty Matthies was Player of the Year in

Division I, where Long Beach Wilson’s Tony Martinho was Coach of the

Year.
