Boys basketball: Jaime keys Mesa win
LA HABRA - Costa Mesa High junior Carlos Jaime, a 6-foot-1
forward-center, amassed 17 rebounds and senior teammate Chad Vakili
scored 27 points as a fill-in point guard to key the Mustangs’ 62-53 win
over Long Beach Wilson in a consolation game of the Sonora/Troy
Tournament Friday at Sonora High.
Vakili, who assumed the reigns of the offense with senior David Conte
sitting out due to disciplinary reasons, scored 18 points after halftime
as the Mustangs confounded Wilson by distributing their scoring punch.
Vakili added four assists.
Junior Danny Krikorian netted four three-pointers in the first half
and senior Nolan Clark came off the bench to match his 12 points, all in
the second half.
Jaime, who “owned the boards,” according to Coach Bob Serven, added
four points against a Bruin front line that included starters 6-6 and
6-5.
Mesa (5-4) wraps up the tournament today at 4:30 p.m. at Troy High,
against an opponent to be determined.
