Dec. 17-23

Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

Heather Marshall goes for her first hat trick leading the Corona del

Mar High girls soccer to a 4-1 victory over visiting Estancia. Marshall

scores two goals on the Sea Kings’ first two possessions in the first

minute of the game. CdM’s Kara Willgeroth makes it 3-0 before halftime

after her goal off an assist from Faith Mickler. Estancia’s Jennifer

Brunick scores midway through the second half.

The Newport Harbor girls basketball team builds a 60-0 lead before the

fourth quarter en route to a 74-11 victory over Magnolia, in pool play

action of the Bolsa Grande Tournament. Newport leads, 23-0, after one

quarter, as 6-foot senior Breanna Badorek scores nine of her 15 points.

Badorek, who shares game-high honors with teammate Colleen Eadie,

finishes with five rebounds, three steals and an assist. M.E. Clayton

scores 10 points and collects four steals, while Desiree Talley leads the

defensive charge with seven steals. Every player scores and makes at

least on steal for the Tars. Sophomore Katie Dunne scores a career-high

12 points.

The Estancia boys soccer team has a little more excitement than it

bargains for when the Eagles romp past Bolsa Grande, 9-0. “There was a

bus load of prisoners that broke down right by (Bolsa Grande) high

school,” Estancia Coach Steve Crenshaw says. “It was right in the middle

of the road when we came up and one of the metal grates on a window had

been pried open. Some of the prisoners escaped.” Helicopters circle

overhead as Fernando Lara leads the scoring with three goals, while

Yenkis Pimental, Brad Wayman, Orlin Ramos, Esaul Mendoza and Stuart

Moncada add one goal each.

The Corona del Mar High boys soccer team shuts out Estancia, 2-0,

avenging a game two years previous. The game in 1989 gets ugly because of

a fight that breaks out. Two years later, CdM and Estancia play

peacefully. The Sea Kings score their two goals in the first half. CdM’s

Jason Boyce scores five minutes into the game on a breakaway. Five

minutes later, CdM junior Tanner Rupp scores on a sensational solo effort

to put the visitors ahead for good. CdM goalie Ryan Muzzy stops eight

shots, while Estancia goalkeeper Carlos Rodriguez records seven saves.

The Estancia boys basketball team does enough to win in a 43-34

victory over visiting Mission Viejo. “That was mess,” says Eagles Coach

Tim O’Brien. “It was no fun to coach, it was no fun to play and it was

probably no fun to watch. It was ugly.” The Eagles shoot 35% (14 of 40)

from the field. But Estancia outscores the Diablos in the third quarter,

13-3, causing six of Mission Viejo’s 16 turnovers. Senior center Matt

Fuerbringer leads the Eagles with 21 points and seven rebounds, adding a

perfect performance (7 of 7) from the free-throw line. Jim Faulkner

scores eight points, grabs six boards and dishes out three assists.

Costa Mesa High names Myron Miller its new football coach. Miller is

the 10th coach in Costa Mesa’s history. Before the Mustangs, Miller

coaches at Ramona High in 1989, when the Rams sweep to the CIF Southern

Section Division IV title. He describes himself as an “old fashioned

coach,” and says his Mustangs will operate in a, “winged-T with a power

pitch on offense.”
