Avalanche take over Lightning in playoff

Brett Morinaka and Nicholas Modrak both posted goals in a shootout

period to lift the Avalanche past the Lightning, 6-5, in a Norris

Division playoff game.

Modrak also scored in the third period to help lead the Avalanche into

overtime, and assisted Marcus Kurth’s second period goal.

Kurth and Bryan Hodges scored opening period goals for the Avalanche,

who received 16 saves from Matthew Inouye.

Travis Beckman scored twice -- including his team’s only goal in the

shootout session, Stephen Marchand scored twice, Michael Marchand scored

once and had two assists and Chris Weldon had a pair of assists for the

Lightning.

Nicholas Weldon came up with 20 saves.

The teams were tied at 4-4 through regulation play. Neither could

score in overtime and moved on to a shootout.

In other postseason games:

Red Wings 4, Thunder 0

The Red Wings advanced behind 16 saves by Darrell McDonald, two goals

and an assist by Rinald Hancock and goals by Mitch Robinson and Alex

Litten.

Slapshots 4, Badgers 1

Kyle Martins netted three goals and Dimitri Coutsoyannopolis added the

other as the Slapshots eliminated the Badgers from title contention.

Sean Froelich scored the lone goal for the Badgers.

Menehunes 5, Surf Dawgz 3

Blake Miller and Zachary Dixon scored first period goals and each

added another goal down the stretch to lead the Menehunes. Tyler Schultz

also scored once with an assist, Cody Ferrer had an assist and Aaron

Nguyen came up with 26 saves for the winners.

Connor Cal Lathrope scored twice, Shaun Dolan scored once and Chris

Jernigan had 25 saves for the Surf Dawgz.

In Smythe Division playoff action:

Jets 4, Vipers 0

Craig Landon scored twice with an assist, Zane Weber tallied a goal

and an assist, Kyle Impelman scored once and Kyle Morrill had 22 saves as

the Jets moved on in postseason play.

Heat 7, Avalanche 3

The Heat scored three goals in the first and third periods to

eliminate the Avalanche.

Max DeVries scored twice and had an assist for the Heat as Chad

Morris, Lewis Gifford, Dean Metherell, Austin Raban and David Daley each

scored once, Chris Jernigan had an assist and Ben Hynes recorded 28

saves.

The Avalanche received two goals from Bryan Marony, one from John

Aldinger, assists from Andrew Wade, Christian Wildey and Jacob Otis and

28 saves from Spencer Layman.

Stars 4, Ice Dogs 3

Dylan Heyden scored two goals, Brett Harper and Trevor Horton each

scored once and Harper and Taylor Song had one assist each to carry the

Stars.

Carsten Beith, Jeffrey Sabraw and Daniel Reed had goals for the Ice

Dogs and Sean Easton had 22 saves.
