YEAR ESTABLISHED: 1912. The congregation originally met in Newport

Beach. Ground was broken at the Magnolia Street site in 1966. The school opened in 1967 and the church offices opened in 1972. The sanctuary was

dedicated in 1974.

SERVICE TIMES: Masses: Sunday at 8 a.m., 9:45 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.; Saturday at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Weekday Masses at 8:15 a.m.; Evening Prayer, weekdays at 5:30 p.m.

CHRISTMAS EVE: 4 p.m. Mass, with Cherub Choir, ages 4 to 8 and

Children’s Handbell Choir, ages 8 to 12; 6 p.m. Mass with Jr. and Sr.

High School Choir, ages 12 to 17 and High School Ringers; 8 p.m., 10 p.m.

and midnight Masses with the 80-voice Parish Choir, organ and orchestra,

selections will include traditional carols and “For Unto Us a Child Is

Born,” from G. F. Handel’s “Messiah.”

CHRISTMAS DAY: 9:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Masses with the 20-voice

Parish Schola and SSJ Parish Bell Ringers, organ and brass. Dec. 30: The

Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, with special

instrumentation and seasonal music. Jan. 1: The Blessed Virgin Mary,

Mother of God, with special instrumentation and seasonal music.

MAKEUP OF CONGREGATION: Members live primarily in the surrounding

area.

CHILD CARE: Provided during Masses. The church has a school for

classes K-8 with 770 students currently enrolled.

TYPE OF WORSHIP: Roman Catholic Masses and prayer services.

TYPE OF SERMON: Each of the church’s pastors develops a theme for a

homily, based on the Scripture readings for the given Sunday and delivers

it at one of the Sunday Masses.

DRESS: A variety of mostly casual dress.

CHURCH AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS: The parish has dozens of programs for

members as well as many outreach programs for the community. A full list

of member and outreach programs and activities is available through the

parish office. The church’s newsletter also provides information on many

of the church’s programs, ministries and activities. MISSION STATEMENT:

We are a Catholic faith community founded and rooted in Christ Jesus and

his Gospel; in union with the Communion of Saints; a participative and

responsible Eucharistic people called to ongoing conversion of mind and

heart. We believe in one God who is creator, redeemer and spirit; that

all human persons are made in God’s image; that God calls us by our

common Baptism to be the presence of Jesus in our parish and beyond. We

live out of our Catholic faith-roots and traditions, witnessing to and

living out the Gospel of Jesus, participating in the Franciscan charism

INTERESTING NOTES: The parish of Sts. Simon and Jude is in the care of

Franciscan friars. The music program, which will provide the special

instrumentation and music for all of the services of Christmastide and

Epiphany, is under the direction of Mark T. Purcell, parish organist;

Brain Dehn, parish choir conductor; Ashley Burke, parish handbell

coordinator.
