Costa Mesa High girls basketball coach Jim Weeks sat and watched

his team miss its first 18 shots from the field, and that was just the

first quarter in Thursday’s 38-30 consolation bracket victory over

Saddleback Valley Christian, at the Mustangs’ Winter Classic.

There was only about six minutes left in the half before the drought

ended, then the Mustangs went on to lead going into the fourth quarter,

27-24.

Rhondi Naff led Costa Mesa with 20 points and nine rebounds, and Tina

Poncher came up with four assists, three in the second quarter.

Costa Mesa meets Fountain Valley today in the consolation semifinals at

noon.
