Boys soccer: Mesa takes two in tourney

ANAHEIM - The Costa Mesa High boys soccer team outshot opponents a

combined 42-5, and outscored foes, 11-0, in two wins in the Magnolia

Tournament at Magnolia High Thursday.

The Mustangs (3-3), who won the Magnolia Tournament last year, opened the

day with a 7-0 victory over John Glenn of Norwalk. Mesa allowed three

shots on goal and on offense fired off 22 shots. Senior Billy Lund and

freshman Alfonso Pineda scored two goals each, while seniors Irwin Salas,

Eli Solis and Socrates Cruz added one apiece. Salas also had two assists,

while senior Michael Gardiner, Lund and Pineda dished off one assist

each.

Senior sweeper Steven Thomas keyed the defense and senior goalkeeper

Bryce Sheridan recorded one save in each game.

Later in the day, the Mustangs blanked St. Margaret’s, 4-0. Mesa built a

2-0 lead before the half, when senior Ricardo Luna scored off an assist

from senior Brian Zing and Salas also struck for a goal with an assist by

Luna. Senior Kevin Alexander scored an unassisted goal and Salas finished

off a pass from Solis in the second half for the Mustangs, who outshot

the Tartans, 20-2.

Mesa will face Long Beach Poly in a semifinal today at 10:45 a.m. The

tourney’s championship game will be at 3:15 p.m.
