Girls basketball: Newport runs out of gas in fourth quarter

The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team took a one-point lead

going into the fourth quarter, but sent Brethren Christian to the

free-throw line too many times and paid the price in a 57-42 loss to the

Warriors in the second round of the Costa Mesa Winter Classic at Costa

Mesa High Thursday.

Jillianne Whitfield made a three-pointer to tie the score at 34 with 6:08

remaining in the game, but the Warriors took over from there, going on a

9-2 run to take a 43-36 lead with 3:05 left.

Newport fouled Brethren Christian several times in the fourth and the

Warriors took advantage, scoring seven of their last 10 points from the

free-throw line.

“We were ahead at the half but in the fourth quarter we just were cold,”

Newport Coach Jen Thompson said. “At the end of the game we were trying

to foul them and stop the clock and send them to the free-throw line

hoping they wouldn’t make their shots, but they made all of them.”

Whitfield led the Sailors (2-12) with 16 points, followed by Athena

Vasquez (nine points) and Vanessa Miller (six pionts). The Sailors face

Carlsbad today in the tournament at 4:40 p.m. at Costa Mesa High.
