COSTA MESA - Senior Christine Caron and junior Rhondi Naff scored

14 points each for Costa Mesa High’s girls basketball team Saturday as

the Mustangs won the consolation championship of their own tournament

with a 50-44 victory over Mission Viejo.

“We’re finding ways to win now,” said Costa Mesa Coach Jim Weeks,

whose team (6-8) outscored the Diablos, 17-13, in the fourth quarter.

Caron, who also had five rebounds and played with a sprained ankle,

nailed 6 of 8 free throws in the final two minutes as the Mustangs held

on.

Mission Viejo’s Meghan O’Donogue, a heavily recruited 6-foot swing

player, scored 16 points. “(Naff) did a good job defending her,” Weeks

said of his all-tournament selection.

Costa Mesa, also led by Rickell Reeves’ eight rebounds, travels to

Villa Park for a nonleague game at 7 p.m. Thursday.
