UCI study: Leisure World population healthy

The seniors who live at Leisure World are not spending a lot of time

just lounging around. In fact, they are healthier and more active than

their counterparts across the nation, according to a study by UC Irvine.

The second annual survey of the Laguna Woods Leisure World retirement

community, released in late November, illustrates a continuing trend. Of

the seniors who responded to the survey, those who say they need

assistance with activities of daily living decreased from 5% to less than

3%. The average age of seniors there is 78.5.

Those figures are in contrast to the national scene, where 14% of

elderly people say they have an impairment that affects daily living,

according to the study.
