Youth soccer: Thunderhawks roll
The Thunderhawks, a Costa Mesa boys under-13 APP soccer team,
pulled out a win after a shootout in the championship game of the Costa
Mesa Classic.
Goalkeeper Thomas Kosnosky made crucial saves in the shootout and
converted a shot for a goal along with Luis Cozza and Caleb Burgess to
lead the Thunderhawks to a victory.
Austin Evett got the Thunderhawks going with a goal on a cross from
Blake Pinto early in the game. Rancho Santa Margarita came on strong in
the second half to take a 2-1 advantage, but Girardo Delgado scored the
equalizer for the Thunderhawks in the final minutes.
The Thunderhawks earned victories over Mission Viejo, South Irvine and
Tierra Santa to advance to the championship.
Against Mission Viejo, Evett scored on a cross from Hayden Hiatt to
spark the Thunderhawks. Evett struck again for the only goal in the
second half.
Against South Irvine, goals were scored by Cozza, Starnes Arnold and
Delgado for a 3-1 victory.
Against Tierra Santa, Delgado scored the only goal of the game.
The Thunderhawks defense was anchored by Kosnosky, Ben Abbott, Pinto,
Caleb Burgess, William Briseno and Kenneth Zich. Contributing on offense
were Evett, Hiatt and Arnold. The midfield was dominated by Matt Grella,
Delgado, Adam Seagondollar, Benny Edles and Cozza.
In girls under-10 action:
* Corona del Mar Silver All-Stars 1, Mission Viejo 0 - In the
championship game of the Costa Mesa Classic, CdM’s Katie Devarian scored
the only goal of the game with two minutes left to play on a cross from
Kathryn Conner. Layne Kelly, Alison Gordon, Kaylee O’Connor, Lauren
Smits, Sarah Folks and Amanda Johnson had solid efforts.
Amanda Garrett, Tasha Greenberg, Azadeh Nazemi, Hannah Rome and Bayle
Stefl sealed the win.
CdM beat Newport Beach and Rancho Santa Margarita en route to the
championship.
