Young Conservatory premieres 2 plays at SCR

South Coast Repertory will present two world premieres - “The Hundred

Dresses” and “Lock Down” -- performed by the theater’s Young Conservatory

Players in March.

“The Hundred Dresses,” adapted by Laurie Woolery from the Eleanor

Estes book, is the story of a young girl who wears the same dress

everyday and gets teased by classmates. The production will be geared for

children in grades three through eight.

“Lock Down,” a story about kids in the new millennium by Julia

Edwards, will be directed by SCR’s Sheila Hillinger and is appropriate

for children in grades eight through 12.

Performance dates are March 9-10 for “The Hundred Dresses” and March

16-17 for “Lock Down.”

Noted Israeli author to speak in February

The Balboa Performing Arts Theater and the Orange County Jewish

Community Scholar Program will present A.B. Yehoshua, a noted Israeli

author, at a 12:15 p.m. luncheon Feb. 22 at the Center Club.

The discussion topic is titled “A Journey to the End of the Millennium

from Mythology to History” and tickets are $36.

Takacs Quartet to play with Philippov

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County recently announced that

Maxim Philippov will perform with the Takacs Quartet at 8 p.m. Feb. 5 at

the Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine.

Philippov, a Moscow native, was the silver medalist of the 2001 Van

Cliburn Piano Competition.

The Takacs Quartet first received international recognition at the

International String Quartet Competition in France in 1977, where they won first prize and the critics’ prize.

The Laguna Chamber Music Society and the Philharmonic Society will

co-present the concert, tickets for which are $20-$29.
