Girls soccer: Sea Kings shellac Eagles, 12-0

COSTA MESA - As cliche as it may sound, the Corona del Mar High

girls soccer team has been following the advice of its coach early in the

Pacific Coast League season. Coach Ron Evans’ Sea Kings (9-3-3, 2-0 in

the PCL) are playing one game at a time.

Thursday was no different as nine different CdM players scored goals

and the Sea Kings enjoyed a 12-0 win over host Estancia.

Now comes the hard part.

CdM, the second ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division IV,

enters the tougher part of its schedule, hosting University Tuesday,

hosting Costa Mesa Thursday and playing at Northwood Jan. 22.

So first things came first against the Eagles (3-11, 0-2) and the Sea

Kings took care of business. They outshot Estancia, 15-0, in the first

half, building a 4-0 lead in the game’s first 26 minutes. It might have

been worse as four shots hit off Estancia’s crossbar or posts.

Then CdM really opened up its offense in the second half, tallying

eight goals out of 12 shots.

Senaratne scored two goals each, while seniors Kristin Hanson, Jaclyn

Thayer and Stephanie Hardison along with juniors Lauren Shepherdson,

Tricia Dorn and Elisha Morgan added one goal apiece. Harvey, Thayer and

junior Paige Janes had two assists each and Senaratne and junior Alivia

Mazura dished one assist apiece.

Morgan, a two-time first-team All-CIF and all-league selection, played

in her first game since knee surgery in late November. She also had two

assists, playing only in the second half.

“We’re playing the best soccer we have played all year,” Evans said.

“We’re becoming a scarier team. This is the time of the year you want to

start peaking and I think we’re doing it.

“Going into Tuesday against Uni,” he continued. “That’s a team that

beat Aliso Viejo and we lost to Aliso. By no means are we overlooking

(the Trojans). They are going to be a handful. That’s the next game on

the schedule and we’re going to train hard and prepare for them.”

Dorn’s goal came in the last minute, when Morgan touched a pass to

Senaratne, who crossed the ball over to Dorn for the goal that the Sea

Kings showed the most celebration over.

Estancia received strong efforts from senior Arlis Reynolds and

juniors Karleen Curran and Ruth Chavero. Curran was one of three

goalkeepers for the Eagles. CdM freshman goalkeeper Rachel Waters had one

save on Estancia’s only shot by sophomore Asia Ingram.

“We’re well aware that the only game that we probably have a shot at

is Laguna Beach,” Estancia Coach Tom Williams said. “We’re in a tough

league. What we do is, we try to put up a scrap. The attitude between the

girls is good. I’m pretty proud of the girls.”

The Eagles return to action Tuesday at 3:15 p.m., hosting crosstown

rival Costa Mesa.
