Lido Isle’s David Levy and Tracey Treacar, both students at the

University of Southern California and members of the USC sailing team,

claimed championship victory in the recent Rose Bowl Regatta hosted by

the USC Varsity Sailing Team, the United States Sailing Center and the

Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach.

The event was the nation’s largest combined college/high school

regatta, attracting 19 college teams including five from the East Coast

and 44 high school teams from throughout California. Levy, the son of

Newport’s Nancy and Barry Levy, members of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht

Club in Corona del Mar, skippered the California Flying Junior. He was

joined by Tracey Treacar, the daughter of Karen and Tom Treacar of Lido

Isle and Scottsdale, Ariz., members of the Lido Isle Yacht Club. Treacar

served as the crew for the winning combination.

Teammates, parents and friends celebrated the stunning victory for USC

at an after regatta dinner at Los Alamitos Yacht Club. Victory toasts

continued on Lido Isle at the Levy residence. The celebration hoopla

could be heard all over the island paradise.

The Rose Bowl Regatta is one of the major annual intercollegiate

sailing events nationwide. It should also be noted that Corona del Mar

High School took a second place in the Gold Fleet and Newport Harbor High

School took a third place in the Gold Fleet. Other local sailors

deserving mention include the outstanding brother/sister yachtsmen Gary

Grimes and Taylor Grimes.

Meredith Potter of Newport Harbor High School, Colin Campbell and Luke

Leffingwell of USC were also among the sailing stars.

Nancy Levy, who chaired the 2001 Volvo Leukemia Cup Regatta in the

Newport Harbor for the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, reports that she is

busy launching the 2002 tournament for both junior and senior sailors set

for May and June of this year.

Levy and other dedicated committee members raised a most impressive

six figure sum for leukemia research last year. With the help of generous

Newport-Mesa underwriters including John and Donna Crean, they expect to

surpass last year’s tally. Levy states, “This is the most rewarding

volunteer position that you could possibly imagine. Organizing sailors to

compete in a regatta allowing them to do something that they truly love

and at the same time raise money to fight the dreaded disease of leukemia

is just about the biggest win-win possible.”

Levy went on to add, “We are so proud and so grateful for the support

of caring citizens in the community. Our hope is to make this event an

important part of the summer sailing season in Newport Beach.”
