CORONA DEL MAR - Short-handed and outmatched, the Corona del Mar

High girls basketball team played a gritty first half, trailing just

21-20 to visiting Pacific Coast League foe University Tuesday.

But then came the second half.

The Trojans (11-7, 3-0 in the PCL) outscored the Sea Kings, 18-2, in

the third quarter to coast to a 48-30 victory.

CdM (6-11, 1-2) was without Courtney Kawata, a senior starting guard

who suffered a rib injury in the 63-25 loss to Estancia Thursday, and

5-foot-8 sophomore Lauren Snell, nursing tendinitis in her Achilles’

tendon. The Sea Kings also lost senior Kelly Luu, who injured her ankle

in the second half Tuesday. In addition, starters Carrie Hawkins and

Jackie McCoy are out for the season with injuries.

“The bright spot is the way our bench played,” CdM Coach Elbert Davis

said. “They played with intensity and passion. I was surprised, but they

showed me that they wanted to play. We’re underhanded but other girls

have to step up. This is their opportunity to show me and shine.”

Junior Kelliann Klein led the Sea Kings with 11 points, scoring eight

in the second quarter. CdM fell behind 8-0, in the first five minutes,

but answered with 8-0 spurt of its own capped by an easy bucket by junior

varsity call-up Kate Heeschen, who stole the ball and converted the

breakaway layup with 45 seconds left in the first quarter.

CdM consistently broke Uni’s full-court pressure defense in the first

half, but Trojans Coach Bob Bernal called it off in the second and the

Sea Kings scored just two points in the third quarter combined with six

turnovers.
