OCC gets $1-million gift

OCC CAMPUS -- The college has received a $1-million gift from the
family of a prolific developer who built the first condominiums in
Southern California.
The gift, presented to the college by Trudy Doyle, is in honor of her
late husband, developer Frank M. Doyle, whose name will grace the
college’s future arts pavilion.
Trustees of the Coast Community College District approved the naming
of the facility Wednesday evening.
Doyle built thousands of Orange County homes and several shopping
centers in the 1960s and ‘70s.
“Orange County did a lot for him, he did a lot for them -- it’s nice
to have people remember him,” Trudy Doyle said.
The Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion will complement the college’s newly
completed Arts Center instructional facility. The 8,500-square-foot
pavilion will house an art gallery, a young artists’ gallery and a cafe.
Construction is expected to begin in the fall, with completion
scheduled for late next year.
OCC has already received $2.25 million in gifts and pledges for the
project, which is being funded entirely by private donations.
Doyle grew up in Ohio and moved with his family to California in 1952.
He was a patron of the arts, especially opera, Trudy Doyle said.
“He appreciated everything, but he was way too busy. Maybe that’s
another reason I’m doing this for him now,” she said.
