Women’s basketball: UCI downs Matadors

Cindy Oparah scored 27 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds

to lead UC Irvine to a 76-62 victory over host Cal State Northridge in a

Big West Conference women’s basketball game Sunday.

The Anteaters received support from two players who had recently been

out with injuries, Wendy Gabbe and Lisa Faulkner. Both had lower leg

stress fractures.

Gabbe contributed with a season-high 16 points, including a trio of

three-pointers. Faulkner chipped in with a career-high 11 points.

Oparah had her eighth double-double of the season. Also helping out

offensively was Erin Tomlinson with nine points.

The Anteaters (6-11, 3-3 in the Big West) scored more points in

regulation time than in any other game this season.

Cal State Northridge (1-14, 1-4) was led by Jenny Shetters with 28

points and 12 rebounds.
