Winter Classic results

The afternoon sun sparkled off the deep blue Pacific on Sunday as the

third annual Winter Classic to benefit the Newport Harbor High School

club surfing team came to a close Sunday at 56th Street in Newport Beach.

About 200 spectators dotted the sand to watch surfers frolic in the

water at the contest, sponsored by Quiksilver, Surfside Sports and Smith

glasses.

The two-day event gave surf team members an opportunity to raise money

for their club and gain experience surfing alongside professionals.

As of Sunday afternoon, the event had generated about $1,500 from

nearly 100 entries, said surf coach Scott Morlan.

Heats lasted 15 minutes for preliminary competitions and 20 minutes

for the finals to give surfers more time to choose better waves, Morlan

said.
