Wrestling: CdM edges Mesa, 38-26
CORONA DEL MAR - The Corona del Mar High wrestling team broke away
from a 26-26 tie with two matches remaining and pulled out a 38-26
Pacific Coast League victory over Newport-Mesa District rival Costa Mesa
on the Sea Kings’ mats Thursday.
CdM seniors Steve Shipman (215-pound weight class) and Steven Russell
(heavyweight) collected six points each, with Shipman earning a pin and
Russell winning by forfeit.
“I told my guys before the match that it would be dead even and every
single point would count,” CdM Coach Gary Almquist said. “Taylor Alston
not getting pinned was huge. He hung in there through three periods.”
Costa Mesa sophomore Silvio Estrada (125) won by major decision, while
junior Matt Grubisich (130) and junior Adam Donovan (135) won by
decision.
The Sea Kings (12-5, 3-1 in league) also received big wins from
freshman Matt Loeb (112), who record his first varsity victory, and
sophomore Ryan Shores. Shores scored a takedown and a near-fall with
under 25 seconds left to come from behind and win, 14-11.
“Loeb had a smile as big as California,” Almquist said of the
freshman’s reaction.
The Mustangs were without senior Myron Tracy, who might have wrestled
in the 160-pound division, but is hospitalized with illness, Almquist
said.
Costa Mesa senior David Benedick dislocated his shoulder during his
match against senior Ben Wynkoop, who won by pin.
