Community college basketball: Double doom for Pirates

COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team is

losing its grip for the one of top three spots in the Orange Empire

Conference after a 58-53 loss to visiting Riverside Friday. The OCC men

also lost to the Tigers, 78-69.

The OCC women’s demise was its 28% shot production from the field (16

of 57), including 12% from three-point land (2 of 17). The Pirates (16-7,

3-3 in the OEC) had just one player score in double figures, freshman

Candice Quiroz, who had 13. The Tigers (11-12, 2-4) weren’t that much

better, shooting 40% from the field (20 of 50) and leading only 31-29 at

halftime.

Coast’s men’s squad (4-16, 1-5) were led by sophomore center Mark

Meyers, who scored 18 points, while freshman point guard Stephon Seales

finished with 13 points and sophomore guard Ryan Webster added 10. The

Tigers (20-5, 5-1) had four players post double-digit scoring and held

the rebounding advantage, 43-36.

Both OCC teams return to OEC action Wednesday, hosting Santa Ana.
