Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

Estancia High’s Sam Nelson hits a pair of free throws to secure a

72-69 boys basketball victory over visiting Aliso Niguel. It is

Estancia’s third straight win by six points or less. Nelson scores 21 of

his game-high 27 points in the first half. Selwyn Mansell and Ryan

Simpson score 16 points each and Simpson grabs 10 rebounds.

Costa Mesa’s Koo Kim scores 27 points, grabs 11 rebounds and dishes

out nine assists to lead the Mustangs girls basketball team to a 59-48

victory over host University. She knocks down a 38-foot, three-point,

buzzer-beating bank shot to end the first half, then scores 11 points in

the second half. Most of Kim’s assists go to Kelly Chapin, who amasses a

career-high 18 points, including 14 after the first half.

Scott Archbold scores all 11 of his points after halftime to help the

Newport Harbor boys basketball team claim a 53-52 win over host Irvine.

Matt Jameson leads the Sailors with 18 points, while Danny Pulido adds 11

points and seven steals.

Later in the week, Jameson hits two free throws with 15 seconds left

to seal a 55-52 win over visiting El Toro. Jameson leads the Sailors with

20 points, while Pulido chips in 16. Archbold scores nine points. Pulido

shoots 6 of 7 from the field, using his 6-foot-5 220-pound frame to go

over the smaller Chargers.

The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team ends Tustin’s 30-game

Sea View League winning streak with a 49-46 home victory. Newport holds

Tustin scoreless in the last two minutes. Genevieve Evarts leads the

Sailors with 20 points and scores the Sailors’ final four points,

including a layup with one minute left. Maureen McLaren contributes eight

points.

The Estancia High boys basketball team races to a 22-8 lead after one

quarter en route to a 64-46 win over crosstown rival Costa Mesa. Matt

Fuerbringer leads the Eagles with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Jim

Faulkner chips in 13 points and Victor Trujillo scores nine. Jeff Pickens

leads Costa Mesa with 12 points and Mesa’s Lam Luu scores 10.

After being shut out in its two previous matches, the Estancia boys

soccer team responds with a 4-0 win over crosstown rival Costa Mesa. Greg

Dill scores two goals and Chad Weaver and Kevin Westman add a goal each.

Travis Grant scores a breakaway goal to clinch the Corona del Mar boys

soccer team’s 2-0 win over Tustin. Grant takes a pass from Scott English

and breaks away. The Sea Kings receive the other goal when a shot goes

off a Tustin player and into the net.
