College baseball: Anteaters swept by Toreros

The University of San Diego completed a three-game sweep of the UC

Irvine baseball team with a 10-6 nonconference win Sunday at Anteater

Ballpark.

The Toreros got on the board in the fifth inning on a two-run single

by shortstop Ben Quinto and a run-scoring single by left fielder Joey

Prast to take a 3-0 lead.

The Anteaters (0-3) answered in the fifth inning when Jon Horwitz

whacked an RBI double. B.J. Eucce added another double and Effren Trejo

singled to drive in a run to tie the score, 3-3.

San Diego (3-0) dominated from then on. The Toreros scored a run in

the sixth, two in the seventh, three in the eighth and one in the ninth.

The Anteaters scored a run in the eight and two in the ninth, but

couldn’t close the gap any further.

UCI freshman starter Brett Smith left the game after five innings. He

gave up three runs and seven hits in a no decision. Michael Koehler came

in to relieve Smith and was credited with the loss after giving up two

earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Offensively, UCI was led by Matt Anderson, who went 2 for 4.

The Anteaters host UCLA Tuesday for a nonconference game at 7 p.m.
