Community college baseball: Pirates open with monster win

COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College baseball team opened its

season with a 19-2 victory over Mt. San Jacinto in the Matt O’Brien

Memorial Tournament at OCC Friday.

OCC freshman shortstop Donnie Murphy, the Pirates’ leadoff hitter,

went 4 for 6, including a home run, with four runs scored. Freshman Zack

Merideth also scored four runs to go with his 3 for 4 day.

Freshman Collin Stiltz blasted a three-run home run in the eighth

inning, and sophomores Jeremy Lahmann and Ryan Marcos each hit one over

the fence.

The Pirates’ ace, sophomore Justin Azze, pitched six solid innings,

striking out six, and freshman Garrett Murdy finished the rest of the way

with three scoreless innings while giving up one hit.

OCC will resume tourney action today with a doubleheader. Beginning at

10 a.m., the Pirates will face Eastern Utah, then they will take on

DeAnza at 2 p.m., at OCC.
