CdM rolls to PCL crown

COSTA MESA - In an show of strength not seen in decades in

wrestling at Corona del Mar High, the Sea Kings swept to the Pacific

Coast League individual championship at Costa Mesa High Saturday behind

champions Steven Russell (heavyweight), Steve Shipman (215 pounds) and

Jeremy Warner (118).

With the top three from each weight category qualifying, Coach Gary

Almquist’s Sea Kings will be entering 12 of 14 weight events for the CIF

Division III meet at Ayala High Feb. 15.

The big one was, as usual for the Sea Kings, the finale, as Russell

improved to 24-5 with his 23rd pin.

Other champions crowned included Costa Mesa’s Matt Grubisich at 130

and Adam Donovan at 135, as well as Estancia’s Victor Carmona at 125.

The Sea Kings also qualified for the 16-team CIF team championships

Feb. 9 at Upland, starting at 10 a.m.
