Anteaters win again
ANTEATER BALLPARK - UC Irvine’s baseball team punished visiting
Brigham Young University for the second straight day Saturday as the
Anteaters unloaded 12 base hits en route to a 10-2 nonconferece victory
before 814 fans.
Shortstop B. J. Bucce was 3 for 3 with two RBI and scored twice, and
catcher Chris Miller was 2 for 4 with a three-run homer.
Brett Smith went five scoreless innings to get the victory as the
Anteters improved to 3-4.
Aside from a first-inning threat when BYU’s Doug Jackson led off with
a single and proceeded to steal two bases before Smith put the fire out,
it was relatively quiet through 41/2 innings.
That’s when Miller made his presence known when he slugged a three-run
homer to highlight a four-run uprising.
Brigham Young answered with two runs in the sixth off reliever Glenn
Swanson, but the Anteaters got a run back in the bottom of the frame when
Eucce singled Danny Miramontes home.
Five more runs poured across in the eighth inning to complete the
rout.
Aside from Miller’s shot, the Anteaters had two other extra base hits.
Steve Guthrie had a triple, drove in a run and scored; and Matt Anderson,
who was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs, had a double.
Smith struck out three and walked one, allowing two hits to record his
first win of the season.
Freshman Michael Koehler pitched two inings of no-hit, no-run relief
to get his second save on the young season.
The Cougars, who opened a three-game series with UCI Thursday night
with a 10-7 victory in 10 innings, fell to 1-5.
The Anteaters will return to their diamond Tuesday night, hosting
Pepperdine at 7 in another nonconference duel.
