Newport Beach Mayor Tod Ridgeway had a failure to communicate with the

crowd Thursday at the 21st annual Mayor’s Dinner hosted by Speak Up

Newport.

Midway into his state of the city address, the newly chosen mayor

attributed a quote -- “What we have here is a failure to communicate” --

to Paul Newman in the film “Cool Hand Luke.” While the quote is from that

film, it was not said by Newman, who played the wisecracking title

character.

Instead, it is said by Strother Martin, the sunglasses-wearing captain

of the road prison chain gang.

But, really, who’s keeping track? It’s “Cool.”
