Bristol Street collision kills 41-year-old woman

A 41-year-old woman died after the bicycle she was riding collided

with a car Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The woman, whose name was not released pending notification to family

members, was riding her bicycle westbound in the 1200 block of Bristol

Street about 12:08 p.m., when she suddenly made a left turn to cross the

westbound traffic lanes, police said.

A 57-year-old Santa Ana man, who was also traveling westbound on

Bristol Street, was not able to avoid the bicyclist in spite of swerving

his vehicle and applying the brakes, officials said.

Police said the impact cause severe trauma to the bicyclist. She was

treated on scene by Costa Mesa paramedics and transported to Coastal

Community Hospital in Santa Ana. She was pronounced dead at 12:48 p.m.,

officials said.

The man complained of pain to his left leg, but refused medical

treatment at the scene of the accident, said police, who are still

investigating the incident.

Winds blow hot and fast through Newport-Mesa

The Newport-Mesa area, like most of Southern California, got the gift

of sunny and breezy conditions over the weekend.

Thanks to the Santa Ana winds that blew at 15 to 25 miles an hour for

most of Saturday, temperatures were in the high 70s and even inched

toward the 80s in some areas, said Brandt Maxwell, meteorologist for the

National Weather Service in San Diego.

A wind advisory was issued Friday night and will continue to be in

effect till afternoon today, he said. The wind is expected to subside in

most areas by today, Maxwell said.

Local police and fire department officials said no wind-related

incidents were reported Saturday.

Flights at John Wayne Airport were not affected, but took off in the

opposite direction, a common practice when Santa Ana winds strike.

People took advantage of the fair weather as they hit local beaches.

The warm temperatures will last through today, Maxwell said.

College district to redraw trustee boundaries

The 2000 Census is prompting the Coast Community College District

Board to redraw its trustee boundaries.

The goal of the voluntary redistricting proposal is to balance the

population in each trustee area based on information from the most

current census.

According to those figures, the Coast Community College District

includes 631,676 voters.

On Feb. 6, the Board chose one of three redistricting scenarios

offered by the Center for Demographic Research at Cal State Fullerton.

The scenario will adjust the trustee area lines so that each area

includes approximately 126,3000 voters each.

There will be a public hearing on the redistricting issue at the

board’s Feb. 20 meeting.

Transplant Olympics seeks Newport-Mesa participants

Southern California transplant recipients are currently being sought

to participate with the 2002 U.S. Transplant Games, an Olympic-style

competition for benefactors of life-saving transplants such as heart,

lung, kidney, pancreas and bone marrow.

The games are presented by the National Kidney Foundation and

sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Athletes, volunteers

and sponsors are sought to help stage the competition to be held June

25-29 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.

Athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in one or

more of 13 sports including racquetball, golf, bowling, cycling,

swimming, tennis and track and field.

The games, held every two years, are expected to draw 2,000 athletes

this year.

Special programs such as Kids’ Time for children ages 2 to 11 and a 5K

road race promoting organ donation awareness will also be held during the

five-day event.

Presidents Day will not stop garbage collectors

Trash pickup will continue as normal in Newport Beach for the

Presidents Day holiday, Feb. 18. Street sweeping, however, will not take

place on the holiday. City Hall will be closed that day. For more
