Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The Newport Harbor High boys soccer team clinches championship glory

with a 3-2 victory over host El Toro to win the Sea View League title. El

Toro ties the game, 2-2, in the 66th minute, but the Sailors, coached by

Ziad Khoury, strike back as Jesse Cortez punches in a goal on Tobin

Junowich’s third assist of the game. Garrett Jansma and Luis Cifuentes

score one goal each.

The Estancia boys basketball team completes a three-peat in the

Pacific Coast League, winning its third straight PCL title after an 86-78

triumph over visiting University. Coach Rich Boyce’s Eagles sink 20 of 26

from the foul line in the fourth quarter to come away with victory. Sam

Nelson leads the way for the Eagles, scoring 27 points, grabbing 15

rebounds and blocking three shots. James Dawkins (23 points), Brandon

Casillas (13), Ryan Simpson (11) and Selwyn Mansell (10) also contribute

in the win.

The Newport Harbor girls basketball team secures second place in the

Sea View League with a 55-42 victory over visiting El Toro in which the

Sailors never trail. Breanna Badorek posts game-highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds, while M.E. Clayton adds 13 points and grabs eight boards.

The Costa Mesa girls basketball team avenges a road loss the previous

year at Laguna Beach, handling the host Artists, 47-39, to finish tied

for second in the PCL with Estancia. Mesa junior Kelly Chapin scores 12

points, while freshman Kalena Jackson adds 10 points.

The Estancia High boys basketball team shoots down crosstown rival

Costa Mesa, 65-52, for the Eagles’ 20th victory of the season. Coach Tim

O’Brien’s Eagles loses their chance for a Pacific Coast League title

earlier in the week with a 55-53 setback to Trabuco Hills. Estancia’s Jim

Faulkner leads all scorers with 20 points in the victory over the

Mustangs. Jeff Pickens and Joel Harding score 14 points each for Costa

Mesa. Pickens grabs 11 rebounds. The Eagles’ Matt Fuerbringer scores 12

points before injuring his ankle in the third quarter, while Jeff Manz

comes off the bench and chips in 11 points.

The Corona del Mar girls soccer team earns its third straight Sea View

League championship, defeating University, 3-0, at the Trojans’ field.

CdM sophomore Stefanie Hughes scores two goals and senior Lisa Boatman

adds one. Goalkeeper Heather Warmington records five saves.

The Newport Harbor girls soccer team blanks Tustin, 5-0, to grab its

first CIF playoff berth since 1987. Stacey Gerry leads the Sailors with

two goals.

The Orange Coast College men’s basketball team upsets two-time

defending state champion Rancho Santiago in overtime, 95-91, in OCC’s

gym. Jeffrey Porter and Agustin Heredia combine for 57 points for the

Pirates, OCC’s Michael Wenzlaff knocks home a three-pointer at the buzzer

to send the game into overtime. The Pirates enter the matchup on the

heels of an embarrassing 87-59 loss to Fullerton, the Bucs’ worst defeat

of the season.
