Report Card
The Huntington Beach City School District held a special meeting
Wednesday to discuss the ongoing battle of mold infesting its schools.
Jeanna Sellmeyer of the Assets Environmental Group gave an educational
presentation about mold infestation and an update of the work that
currently is being conducted at Eader Elementary School, where four
classrooms currently are closed for mold cleanup, Principal Dixie Arnold
said.
The meeting allowed parents to voice their concerns and hopefully get
some answers.
“[Parents] are concerned and rightly so,” said Supt. Gary Rutherford.
“We will be receiving a detailed report from the environmental firm
cleaning the classrooms on what they have found by next week.”
One of the first schools plagued by the infestation of mold was
Kettler Elementary, about a year ago.
“We did an aggressive mold abatement procedure during the summer and
it rectified the situation,” said Kettler Principal Billie Baker. “Once
air samples taken in our rooms came back clear, all of our carpets were
replaced and where sinks and cabinets needed to be replaced, they were.”
Baker said there has been not been a reoccurrence of mold in Kettler
classrooms.
To date, the district has spent more than $600,000 in aggressive mold
abatement treatments, Rutherford said.
The proper parenting attitude
Parents have lamented the difficulty of dealing with teens for as long
as they have existed. But one group suggests that control is more than
just laying down the law -- its all in the proper attitude, said Nancy
Diamant.
Diamant is an instructor for Active Parenting of Teens, a program
offered through the Huntington Beach Adult Schools. It covers such topics
as courage and self-esteem, responsibility and discipline and cooperation
and communication.
The Ocean View High School Parent Teacher Student Assn. is bringing
Diamant to speak to families for a special presentation called,
“Motivating Teenagers” on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the school.
The community is encouraged to attend the event, and seating is
limited.
Diamant will be discussing how to positively influence adolescents and
inspire them to cooperate.
