Girls basketball: Wase named Co-MVP

Estancia High sophomore point guard Trisha Wase, who led the Eagles

to a share of their first Pacific Coast League title since 1991, shares

Player of the Year honors With University High senior point guard Shaadi

Ariazand to highight seven Newport-Mesa players honored on the coaches’

all-league selections.

The 5-foot-4 Wase, a first-team all-league choice as a freshman,

averaged 16.3 points in 10 league games to help the Eagles finish 9-1,

tied with co-champion University. She posted a triple-double (25 points,

21 steals and 10 assists) in a blowout win over Laguna Beach Jan. 17.

Estancia juniors Xochitl Byfield and Tisha Gray, as well as Costa Mesa

junior Rhondi Naff, are also first-team picks.

Corona del Mar senior Courtney Kawata, Estancia senior Marie Rodriguez

and Costa Mesa senior Christine Caron are second-team honorees.

Byfield, a 5-8 forward who was second-team all-league as a sophomore,

averaged 10 points against PCL competition.

Gray, a 5-9 forward, averaged 13.7 points in league after earning

second-team All-PCL laurels last season.

Naff, a 5-11 forward, averaged 14.9 points against league rivals to

help Mesa extend its streak of CIF playoff appearances to 13 straight

seasons.

Kawata, a 5-4 sharpshooting guard who missed nearly three league games

with a rib injury, averaged 8.5 points against PCL foes.

Rodriguez averaged 6 ppg in league, including a career-high 17-point

performance against Uni that included five three-pointers.

Caron, who battled an Achilles injury all season, averaged 4.3 points

in 11 league games, including a third-place playoff game won by the

Mustangs in overtime. Caron was also a second-team selection as a junior.
