COSTA MESA - Former Orange Coast College women’s basketball star,

Jamie Shine, who is now the Pirates’ assistant coach, will be inducted

into the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches

Association Hall of Fame March 16.

Shine, who played for the Pirates during the 1994-95 and 1995-96

seasons, was a two-time All-Orange Empire Conference first-team performer

for the Bucs, and was first-team All-State as a sophomore.

She ranks among the top six players in 10 of OCC’s 15 women’s

basketball categories. She was named OCC’s Female Athlete of the year in

1995-96.

The March 16 induction ceremony will take place during a brunch at the

California State Women’s Basketball Tournament in Stockton. Shine will be

introduced between the tournament’s two semifinal games that afternoon.

“Jamie is the best and hardest working player I’ve coached in my 13

years at Coast,” OCC Coach Mike Thornton said. “The abilities she

possessed as a player have transferred to her role as a coach. I’m very

lucky to have her.”

Shine is in her third year as the Pirates’ assistant and her goal is

to be a head coach.

Following her OCC playing career, Shine transferred to Saint Mary’s

College, where she started her senior season for the Gaels.

Shine ranks first on OCC’s all-time charts for single-season rebounds

(372), single-season rebounding average per game (11.3), career rebounds

(702) and career rebounding average (10.5). She is second in points

scored in a career (1,060). The OCC Hall of Famer is third in career

scoring average (15.8) and single-game rebounds (19). During her

sophomore season for the Pirates, she averaged 17.8 points per game, the

sixth best single-season scoring average in OCC history.

Three times during her career she scored 30 or more points in a game,

and five times she grabbed 17 or more rebounds.

Shine also starred in basketball, volleyball and track and field at El

Modena High. She was an All-Century League basketball performer both her

junior and senior years, and was named league Most Valuable Player as a

junior.

Shine joins two others with OCC backgrounds who have been inducted

into the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Sue Brown,

a longtime OCC coach, was inducted in the 1980s. OCC Foundation director

Doug Bennett, who was tournament director for several women’s state

tournaments, was inducted two years ago.
