Girls soccer: Costa Mesa falls

ENCINO - Costa Mesa High senior Nichelle Janti was taken out of the

game due to an injury and host Louisville took advantage to earn a 2-1

girls soccer victory over the Mustangs in the second round of the CIF

Southern Section Division IV playoffs.

“(Faren Baugh) basically stomped on Nichelle’s ankle when she had the

ball,” Mesa Coach Dan Johnston said. “(Baugh) got a yellow card, but it

took Nichelle out of the game and Baugh, who Nichelle was covering the

whole game, scored.”

Janti was taken to the hospital, but Johnston said he did not know how

serious her injury was.

Baugh’s goal was scored 30 minutes into the second half to give the

Royals a 2-0 advantage. Junior Sharon Day answered with a goal for Mesa

seven minutes later, but it was all the Mustangs (13-6-4) could muster.

The Royals (19-5-1), got on the board early with a goal 12 minutes

into the contest. Both of the team’s goals were “rockets” from about 30

yards out, Johnston said.

“It was a well played game. Both teams fought hard,” he said. “I was

very proud of the way our team played. If we had won the coin toss and

played them at home I think we would have beat them.”

Kaitlyn Gentling piled up six saves while Louisville’s goalkeeper had

seven.
