The 2002 high school softball season is just eight days away, with the

first season opener scheduled for March 1.

At Edison High, a strong senior class should help the Chargers move up

the ranks in the Sunset League race. Marina boasts three returning

first-team all-league players and figures to make another strong run for

the title, and there’s also strong optimism at Huntington Beach High,

which will field a lineup dotted with several new players.

At Ocean View, the Seahawks appear loaded again and figure to be in

the hunt for the Golden West League crown. They also have the talent to

make their 10th consecutive playoff appearance at the conclusion of the

2002 season.

Here is a look at each of the four local high school softball teams:

strong senior leadership and experience,” Mathieson said. “We have solid

pitching, lots of speed on the bases and good team chemistry.”

OUTLOOK: “We basically are a new team with eight new players,”

Lipscomb said. “Pitching will be a key factor for us this season. We

should have improved offensive numbers and versatility at many positions.

If our pitching holds, we should be a factor in the Sunset League.”

OUTLOOK: Garcia, a returning pitcher with an ERA of .066, has done a

great job in the off season, Luth said. She also expects San Diego

State-bound senior leader Bree Boyer to contribute largely at the plate.

“I think we have done a great job preparing for our 2002 season,” she

said.

OUTLOOK:

With the return of Tuggle, the Golden West League’s returning Player

of the Year and Cruz, a first-team all-league pitcher, Ocean View seems

poised to reach the playoffs for the 10th consecutive year.

“With the return of those two and a group of other talented players,

our program continues to be strong and will compete for a league

championship,” Ponce said.
