Nike buys Costa Mesa-based Hurley

COSTA MESA -- Hurley International, a popular surf and skate wear

company, announced an alliance with Nike this week that officials say

will allow the smaller brand to remain autonomous while reaping the

benefits of big-name backing.

Nike will own the sport clothing company, but Newport Beach resident

Bob Hurley -- the company’s founder -- will remain president. Hurley will

continue to oversee design, development and distribution, he said.

“The Hurley brand is going to stay the Hurley brand. It’s our message.

It’s the same management team. Nothing is going to change,” Hurley said.

Nike was approached by Hurley officials to help the 3-year-old company

meet its goal of global popularity, Hurley said. The company explored

other international partnerships before entering a nine-month negotiation

with the sporting giant.

“We decided it was best to partner up with one person who knew what

they were doing worldwide,” Hurley said.

In a statement, Nike officials said the Costa Mesa company was a

“strong brand, uniquely positioned in the marketplace” with growing

popularity among teenagers.

Financial terms of the agreement were not released.

Although Hurley brand items will not make their way to Niketown

shelves, the larger company will help with expansion to international

markets.

Hurley wants to produce accessories and footwear.

“Obviously with Nike shoes, it would be a good idea,” Hurley said.

Hurley, 46, founded the clothing company after marketing, producing

and designing for surf wear maker Billabong. Hurley International is

rooted in skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding, and its brand name is

frequently spotted on Newport-Mesa residents.

Hurley is a 20-year industry veteran and a surfer himself.

“Positivity is our message. Having fun every day is our motto,” Hurley

said.
