College baseball: UCI bounces Pepperdine

MALIBU - Freshman lefthander Glenn Swanson handuffed host

Pepperdine on two hits, striking out five and walking one as he led the

UC Irvine Anteaters to an 8-2 nonconference baseball victory.

The Anteaters (9-9) struck for three runs in the first inning and

never trailed, adding single tallies in the fourth and fifth to stretch

the lead to 5-1, then iced it in the eight with three more as they wasted

six Pepperdine pitchers with a 13-hit attack.

First baseman Matt Anderson was 4-for-5 and scored twice, catcher

Chris Miller, with his sixth double of the season, was 2-for-43 with an

RBI and two runs scored; and second baseman Effren Trejo was 2-for-3 with

three RBIs.

Outfielder Jon Horwitz had two hits, as well, with a run scored.

Pepperdine dropped to 8-10.

In a night game Tuesday at Anteater Ballpark, Michigan came on strong

against host UC Irvine to earn a 4-2 victory in nonconference baseball.

Michigan took a 2-0 lead in the third, but UCI got on the board in the

bottom of the inning with a bases-loaded walk given up by pitcher Tim

Leveque. He retired the next three batters to end UCI’s scoring threat

and earn his first win of the season.

Paul Hammond pitched two innings and gave up no runs or hits to pick

up a save for Michigan (1-4). UCI starter Paul French (1-3) allowed three

runs on seven hits. He also struck out six.

Matt Anderson went 3 for 5 with one RBI to lead the Anteaters.

Next up for the Anteaters is a three-day stint in Hawaii, starting

Friday.
