THE LAST WORD
When Newport Beach officials learned in mid-February they had issued
permits for two huge events for the same day at Newport Center, a large
“oops” must have rang through City Hall.
But we can all rejoice now knowing that a solution has been found
thanks to organizers of the Spirit Fun Run. Next Sunday, the run will
coincide with the Toshiba Senior Classic golf tournament, which will play
host to about 25,000 fans on Newport Center Drive, the same street the
run takes place on.
Something had to give or else the runners would be forced onto an
obstacle course full of golfers armed with clubs and putters. As fun as
that might sound on a television network’s prime-time schedule, it
wouldn’t be prudent.
So, the Spirit Fun Run’s organizers have decided to shell out extra
money to alter its route to accommodate its 5,000 participants as well as
the golfers and their fans. We thank the event organizers for sacrificing
their own event so that both shows can go on. That’s the spirit.
