Anteaters prevail over Rainbows

HONOLULU - The UC Irvine baseball team capitalized on six errors to

beat Hawaii, 12-5, in nonconference action at Les Murakami Stadium

Saturday night.

UCI (11-9) began the game with a flurry, scoring five unearned runs in

the first inning. In the second inning, Chris Miller hit a two-run homer

for the only earned runs given up by Rainbow pitchers. The Anteaters got

two more unearned runs in the second to take a 9-0 advantage.

Hawaii (6-9) started to chip away slightly, scoring a run in the

third, fourth and fifth innings. But UCI put the game away with three

more unearned runs in the sixth.

Brett Smith (2-0) got the win for the Anteaters, while Aaron Pribble

(2-1) picked up his first loss of the year in front of a crowd of 2,623.

Smith pitched seven innings, giving up four runs with six strikeouts.

Miller led the way for the Anteaters offensively, going 2 for 6 with

three RBIs and two runs scored. Jon Horwitz added a hit and two RBIs in

the win, while Jamie Martinez scored twice and recorded an RBI and a hit.
