Golf: Inman’s group wins Toshiba Pro-Am

NEWPORT BEACH - Senior PGA Tour professional Joe Inman and his

group won the Toshiba Pro-Am Monday at Newport Beach Country Club with a

net 55, winning a putting contest over Jim Thorpe, whose team also carded

a 55.

Hugh Baiocchi and his team shot 56 and finished third.

Amateurs Bill Szarowicz, Mike Mitton, Steve Kato and Ken Vegors teamed

with Inman, while Bob Bennett, Gary Weaver, Jerry Lumpkin and Pete

Peterson played with Thorpe.

Elliot Becker, Jeff Conway, Mike Gumbert and Barry Schwartz played

with Baiocchi.

Former major leaguers Mark McGwire and Doug DeCinces played in the

pro-am. DeCinces shot 76.

There was no money purse for the pros.

In the Monday Toshiba Senior Classic qualifier at Goose Creek in Mira

Loma, Butch Sheehan of Reno, Nevada, shot 65 and finished first, earning

one of three spots into the Senior PGA Tour field Friday through Sunday.

Michael Zinni of Mankato, Minn., and Morris Hatalsky of Fairview,

N.C., both shot 67 to qualify.

Roy Christensen of Spanish Fork, Utah, and James Sheerin of Rye Beach,

N.H., both shot 68 and are the first and second alternates, respectively.
