Prep baseball: Sea Kings hang on, 7-6
CORONA DEL MAR - Senior Billy Eagle’s fourth-inning grand slam
helped host Corona del Mar High take a 7-1 lead and it turned out to be
just enough to claim a 7-6 win over Foothill in a consolation semifinal
baseball game of the Newport Elks Tournament’s Foothill Division.
Eagle went 2 for 3 and junior teammate Keith Long went 2 for 3 with a
double and an RBI to lead a 10-hit CdM attack that also benefited from
five Foothill errors. Josh Bradbury also had two hits for the Sea Kings
(2-1).
Blake Contant earned the pitching victory, but not without some help
from junior Nick Rhodes.
Rhodes, an All-Newport-Mesa District selection last spring, came in
with one out in the sixth and the tying run on third. He induced a popup,
then fanned the Knights’ leadoff man to end the threat. Rhodes then
finished up to record his first save.
