Marine Corps PFC Shane P. Ontiveros, son of Gary Ontiveros of Costa

Mesa and alumni of Estancia High School, completed basic training at

Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.

After a short leave, he will help out at the Marine Corps Recruiting

Command in Costa Mesa. He will then travel to North Carolina for

training. . . . Newport Beach resident Hilary Wynne made the dean’s list

for the 2001 fall semester at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. Students

earn dean’s list honors at Wheaton for maintaining grade-point averages

of 3.25 or higher. Wynne is a graduate of Madiera School and is the

daughter of Donald and Nancy Wynne of Newport Beach. Wheaton is a liberal

arts college with 1,500 students from 43 states and 35 countries. . . .

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Brandon M. Martin, son of Laurie A. and

Steven R. Labbitt of Costa Mesa, reported to duty aboard the guided

missile cruiser Bunker Hill, deployed to Yokosuka, Japan. Martin joined

the Navy in September 1999. . . . WL Homes’ Chief Executive Larry Webb

was selected to receive one of the highest achievement awards in the

building industry, the Max C. Tipton Award. After 20 years of service in

the industry, Webb is being recognized for his innovative thinking and

service. Under his supervision and as a result of his commitment to

customer satisfaction, WL Homes received a first-place ranking among

Southern California builders for three consecutive years. . . . Ira

Hermann, a Newport Beach financial representative with the Northwestern

Mutual Financial Network’s Waltus general agency in Newport Beach,

received a sales award for the company’s Western region in 2001. Hermann

ranked fourth among 1,149 financial representatives participating in the

Western region’s annual sales contest. She is among the company’s 7,500

financial representatives who provide guidance on insurance, investment

services and products, retirement and estate planning, employee benefits,

and education funding. The company is consistently ranked one of the best

sales forces in the industry, according to Sales and Marketing Management

magazine surveys, and in 2000 was named the best in the nation of any

industry.
