College women’s basketball: Weidler named Lion of the Week
COSTA MESA - For the third time in her career, Beth Weidler has
been named Vanguard University’s Lion of the Week, after her stellar play
in basketball.
Weidler, a 5-foot-8 senior guard and three-sport athlete from
Esperanza High, has been peaking when the Lions need her most.
She helped Vanguard earn its fourth appearance (Weidler’s third) at
the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships.
Normally the fifth leading scorer on the team, Weidler has stepped up
her role as a sharp-shooter in the final games of the season and has been
the leading scorer in three of the past four games for Vanguard. She has
scored well above her season average in each contest. Last week, she
averaged a team-high 17 points per game and also led the team in assists,
and free throws made.
Since the middle of February, Weidler has been on a hot streak,
averaging 15 points per game, more than double her season average of 7.1.
In two crucial match-ups last week, Beth paced the Lions to a
first-round playoff win over Westmont College with 14 points and five
assists, and a near-upset in a triple-overtime loss at Azusa Pacific
University in the semifinal of the GSAC Tournament.
Weidler had 20 points and four assists, and was 11 for 13 from the
free-throw line in the loss to APU. She has also made four or more
three-pointers in five of the last six games of the season.
In the last game, Weidler broke her personal mark for points in a
season (183) and currently has 198 points. She is also only two field
goals and two three-pointers short of her season-bests in those
categories.
