Vanguard sweeps
COSTA MESA - The Vanguard University softball team racked up its
third and fourth victories over a span of two afternoons Saturday as the
Lions followed up Friday’s sweep of Hope International with a sweep of
visiting The Master’s College in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
Gina Liebengood tossed a four-hitter in the opener en route to a 3-0
victory, then Marcikea Ball limited The Master’s to three hits over five
innings in a 9-1 nightcap win.
Liebengood struck out nine to up her record to 10-4.
Rachelle Rolle got the big hit when she delivered a two-run double in
the fourth inning to snap a scoreless game.
In the five-inning nightcap, the Lions used four hits and two walks to
rack up a five-run second inning. Lisa Jackson’s bases-loaded triple was
the highlight.
The Lions are now 21-8-1, 6-2 in the GSAC. The Master’s fell to
16-11-1, 2-4.
Vanguard plays a pair of doubleheaders at the University of
Hawaii-Hilo Tuesday and Wednesday and has a doubleheader with Chaminade
Saturday to wrap up the Lions’ nonconference venture in the islands.
