Boys soccer: Seven Tars honored

The Newport Harbor High boys soccer team, in contention for a Sea

View League title going into its final regular-season game before

finishing second, has been honored with seven players among the coaches’

all-league selections.

Among the Sailors’ first-team selections are seniors Tyson Wahl and

Kevin Campos, both of whom are all-league for the third time in their

distinguished varsity careers.

Wahl, a midfielder who spent his junior season in Florida training

with the national under-17 team, was a first-team pick in 2000 as a

sophomore. He was also second-team All-CIF Southern Section Division II

that year. The UC Berkeley-bound standout was second-team All-Sea View as

a freshman.

Campos, Coach Kevin Esparza’s sweeper, was second-team all-league as a

sophomore and a junior.

Sophomore Will Guzman and junior Jose Serpas, integral parts of the

Tars’ offense, are also first-team choices. Serpas scored both goals in a

2-0 first-round CIF Division II playoff triumph at Santa Ana Valley.

Representing the Sailors on the second team are sophomore fullbacks

Joel Walker and Matt Tracy, as well as sophomore goalie Hector Campos.

Woodbridge senior forward Pieter Berger, who had close to 30 goals for

the league champion Warriors, is the Player of the Year.
