Girls soccer: Shepherdson, Day share MVP
Barry Faulkner
Corona del Mar High stopper Lauren Shepherdson and Costa Mesa
forward Sharon Day, both juniors, are Co-Most Valuable Players in the
Pacific Coast League, topping a list of 15 locals named all-league by the
circuit’s girls soccer coaches.
Shepherdson, a second-team All-PCL selection as a sophomore, emerged
as a steadying force for the Sea Kings, who won their third straight PCL
crown and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division IV semifinals for
the third straight season.
Day, first-team all-league as a sophomore, scored a team-high 17 goals
and added nine assists to help the Mustangs finish tied for second in
league. Mesa also won the program’s first CIF playoff game.
First-team picks from CdM are juniors Jenny Long, Alivia Mazura and
Elisha Morgan.
Costa Mesa junior Devin Denman and senior Sarah Ronquillo, as well as
Estancia senior Arlis Reynolds, are also first-team honorees.
The second team includes Alison Brawner, Allison Harvey and Rachel
Waters from CdM, as well as Costa Mesa’s Nilani Duarte, Kaitlyn Gentling
and Jenny Sparks.
Morgan, a midfielder, is a first-team pick for the third straight
season. She was also a first-team All-CIF choice in Division IV as a
freshman and sophomore.
Janes, a sweeper, is a repeat first-team selection. She also earned
second-team honors as a freshman. Janes was third-team All-CIF last
season.
Reynolds, a midfielder, is another repeat first-team choice and the
lone honoree from the Eagles.
Denman, a junior sweeper, and Long, a midfielder, were second-team
All-PCL last season.
Ronquillo, a senior forward, scored 14 goals and added nine assists
for Coach Dan Johnston’s squad.
Mazura was a midfielder for Coach Ron Evans’ Sea Kings.
Harvey, a senior forward who shared league MVP honors last season,
battled injuries this year. She was also a first-team All-PCL choice as a
sophomore and a first-team All-CIF pick the last two seasons.
Sparks, a freshman forward, collected 14 goals and six assists for
Mesa, for which Duarte was a freshman stopper and Gentling a sophomore
goalkeeper.
Brawner was a senior midfielder for CdM, while Waters was the Sea
Kings’ freshman goalie.
