Newport Beach Little League: Reds have that Winning feeling

In a bit of coincidence, Timmy Winning drove in the game-winning

run to score Sean Tokuyama, giving the Reds a 5-4 victory over the

Braves, in Newport Beach Little League Majors Division action. The Reds

rallied in the sixth inning, after trailing 4-3. The Reds’ Dylan Davis’

single brought in Evan McNerny to tie the game, 4-4.

Reds pitcher Andrew Silva and Braves’ hurler Thomas Koss each held

their opponents to four hits over five innings of work. The Braves

received hits from Koss, Cambden Nicholson and Tom Dialynas, while the

Reds were powered offensively by Blaine Nielson and Brett Bartlett.

J.P. Gromly, Joe Frey, Shayne Roddy, Eric Mooney and Tony Cocco

contributed defensively to the Reds’ victory.

In other NBLL Majors Division action:

*Diamondbacks 10, Giants 0 - Conner Whalen and Garrett Amoroso

combined for strong pitching performances to help lead the Diamondbacks

to the victory. Diamondbacks catcher Tommy Colton was a defensive

standout, preventing two runners from scoring. He also threw out another

runner attempting to steal third base. Leading the offensive charge for

the D-Backs was Mason Sayer, who went 3 for 3. Other hot batters for the

Diamondbacks included Doug Kelly, Michael Artenian, Riley Sullivan,

Conner Whalen, Chris Rosen and Scott Colton.

Joe Eberhard and David Wheatley made excellent defensive infield plays

for the Giants.

In AA Division action:

*Diamondbacks 16, Cardinals 6 - Michael Taormina’s towering home run

in the first inning ignited the Diamondbacks’ hitting attack. Andrew

Machoskie and Sandon Griffin also pounded out home runs, while Brandon

Pick blasted a triple and stole three bases. Diamondback pitchers Nathan

Wagner and Sam Cuberio held the Cards to six runs.

In AAA Division action:

*Yankees 13, Braves 8 - A 12-hit attack, including three hits by Gavin

Koontz, two hits each from Jake Starnes and Josh Starnes and a triple by

Mattias Russo-Larsson led the Yankees to victory. The Yankees’ J.P.

Fleming, Riley Conroy, Anthony Mainero and Jesse Starnes also contributed

hits.

The pitching for the Yankees, which included clutch performances from

Zac Cabin, Conroy and Josh Starnes, held the Braves to only three hits.

Fleming and Jess Starnes also helped in the pitching effort. The Braves

pitching was led by Steve Bruno and Jarrett Logan, while hitting was

provided by Andrew Dunlap, Michael Franklin and David Weiland.

*Giants 11, Cardinals 4 - Jamie Heinecke, Mitch Gardner and Josh

Harrison combined to pitch a two-hitter for the Giants. Leading the

Giants on offense were Jack Gerdau and Beau Attyah, who scored two runs

each, while Max Colvin had a triple and two RBIs. On defense, the Giants

were led by John Cozart, who made two stellar plays at second base. The

Cardinals were led by Ben Capaldi (triple) and Peter Fraaza (double with

a RBI).

*Giants 15, Reds 8 - Jack Gerdau, Beau Attyah and Mitch Gardner

pitched the Giants to victory as they combined to allow only two base

runners over the last three innings. The Giants offense was led by Josh

Harrison, Attyah, Gerdau, Gardner, Peter Weidner and Jamie Heinecke, who

combined to score 11 runs.

On defense, the Giants were supported by John Cozart, who made three

outstanding plays, and catcher Eric Chebil.

Cameron Koziara smacked a home run a double to lead the Reds, while

teammate Carter Taylor collected two hits.
