Boys track and field: Newport sweeps to victory

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Dartangan Johnson, David Sprenger, Evita

Castillo and Lauren Paul were double winners and helped lead the Newport

Harbor High boys and girls teams to their first victories of the season

over nonleague host Huntington Beach Friday.

The Sailor squads have been in two tri-meets, but both were competed

in a non-scoring format.

Johnson completed personal-best times, winning the 100-meter race

(11.1) and the 200 (22.5), as the Sailors won, 72-60. Sprenger won the

long jump (21-1) and triple jump (42-3).

Matt Tracy was also a winner for the Newport boys, finishing first in

the 400 (52.9), while Alec Urtusuastegui won the 1,600 (4:50.1) and Nick

Miller won the 32,00 (10:29.5). Sprenger and Johnson along with Matt

Encinias and Adam Kerns took first in the 400 relay (45.2), and Tracy,

Johnson, Zach Zarnow and Pete Bas won the 1,600 relay (3:38.2).

On the girls side, Castillo filled in nicely for Elizabeth Clayton,

who is nursing minor leg injuries. Castillo won the long jump (15-1) and

triple jump (33-1).

Jillianne Whitfield threw personal bests to win the shot put (34-10

1/2) and finish second in the discus (118-6).

The Sailors open up Sea View League action Thursday at Aliso Niguel.
